Alert on possible tsunami after 8.2 magnitude quake (Updated)

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department has advised people in the northern states of Perlis, Kedah, Perak and Penang to move away from beaches as a safety precaution against a possible tsunami in the wake of a powerful earthquake that struck off Sumatra, Indonesia at 7.10pm.

The magnitude of the quake, earlier measured at 7.9 on the Richter scale, has been revised to 8.2R

Science Technology and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis said fishermen in these states should return to shore immediately for their safety.

He said although no tsunami had been detected but any new information would be relayed to the police stations, relevant departments and the media as soon as they are available.

The minister said further information would be relayed by 11pm.

Malaysian is adequately equipped to detect a tsunami and issue a warning within an hour before it reaches the shore.

The system is based on two buoys - one in the Andaman Sea near Rondo Island in Indonesia and the other in the South China Sea near Pulau Layang-layang in Sabah.

Malaysians would be able to receive notice of evacuation via television, radio, satellite broadcast and SMS within 15 minutes of data transmission from the buoys.

Tremors were felt in parts of the west coast of peninsular Malaysia when the quake, centered at 105 km southwest of Bengkulu, Sumatra and 718km southwest of Johor Bahru, struck at a depth of 15.6km.

In JOHOR BARU, thousands of people at the Bukit Cagar flats evacuated their homes after they felt tremors. Residents at the 17-storey blocks of flats said they felt the tremors at around 7pm and quickly made their way down to the ground floor.

Storekeeper Pang Tai Kuang, 35, said he was awakened by the tremors, which lasted about 15 minutes.

Housewife Juliana Ghazali, 28, who just gave birth three days ago, had to walk down from her flat on the 15th floor because the elevator was out of service.

“I was scared and quickly made my way out. But I am feeling dizzy now from the physical exertion as I am still weak from the delivery,” she said.

In MALACCA, residents of several high-rise apartments rushed out after feeling the tremors. Residents of apartments in Ujong Pasir and Banda Hilir felt it the most.

Michael Nunis, 58, who was visiting a friend in Ujong Pasir, said:

“ At first I did not realise that it was an earthquake until someone asked around whether they felt the vibrations,” he said.

Gloria Wong, 30, said she was with her three children on the eighth floor of the 12-storey Kekwah apartment when she felt the tremors for five to six seconds.

“ I was scared and immediately rushed down with my children, using the staircase,” she said, adding that there were about 100 people when they came down to the ground floor.

Residents at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital quarters were asked to evacuate the three blocks of flats after tremors were felt.

Gurdav Kaur, 40 said her mother saw the fish aquarium shaking, and soon after announcements were made ordering residents to evacuate the buildings.

“The authorities have been conducting checks to see whether it is safe for us to go back in,” she added.

In PENANG, the police were put on alert after the Meteorological Department issued a tsunami advisory alert.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid said patrol cars were deployed to Gurney Drive and the Esplanade to advise people to stay away from the promenade.

This is for real. Well I hope there won't be another tsunami. We had enough already.

Melaka's Famous Chicken Balls Shop, Chung Wah

The infamous Malacca's chicken rice balls!

My dad comes from Malacca so I have a bit of history going on with Malacca. Well, obviously I like the foods there. If you go to Malacca and you missed chicken rice balls, you never been to Malacca. Theres a few nowadays in Malacca but one of the famous spot will be Chung Wah Coffee Shop, just around the corner of the Stadhuys building. Its always packed during weekends due to tourists mainly from other states and Singapore. The nice part of chicken rice balls is its easy to eat. I mean like you can eat it just like it with chicken of course. On top of that, they have other side dishes available as well. Its a nice place to go to eat when you are in Malacca, something different. Price is reasonable, not too much even though there's always tourists. Anyways, its good to ask before you order, right?

Liverpool's season?

Liverpool's season this year? Well so far after the first few games, Liverpool looks exceptionally good and lots of praises from pundits as well. Yet, even a Liverpool supporter, it is still very early to tell. Even though Benitez claimed that there are 2 player on every department but defensively the first 11 are still the strongest. For Torres, I think he is a miracle striker for easily adapted to English football so fast. Can't we forget the likes of Chelsea's expensive strikers such as Andrei and Man Utd's Tevez or even Ballack. Well, lets sit tight and see how England fare first upcoming Saturday's Israeli game. You never walk alone.

Chelsea LOST in Villa Park!

Aston Villa displayed a great result at Villa Park park by sinking Chelsea a 2-0 win. 2 second half goals from Knight and Agbonlahor denied Chelsea and Liverpool maintain the Premier League top spot with huge advantage of goal differences. Other Sunday results saw 10 man Arsenal beat Pompey 3-1 and Blackburn brushed off Man City 1-0 with each player sent off from respective team. So far, this season is quite interesting with the likes of Man Utd struggled for the first few matches. Are injuries really affected Man Utd and Chelsea? But its just too early to say for anything, till the fat lady sings!

LIVERPOOL SIXed Derby!

Liverpool started without captain Stevie G and vice captain Jamie Carragher crushed Derby 6-0! After winning Toulouse mid week with 4-0 demolition, today Liverpool simply outclassed Derby sending them rock bottom. Alonso and Torres scored 2 each with Voronin and Babel scored each. Liverpool looks strong as title contender this year. Bear in mind, Crouch doesn't even made in the squad today after scoring midweek and Harry Kewell is yet to make a start for Premiership game this season. The depth of the squad showed the strength of Liverpool! The win moves Liverpool on top of the table after today matches. You never walk alone!

Transformers G1 Slugslinger Targetmaster Review

One of the missing piece of my collection. After 4 years, only I manage to complete this piece. I must say most of the body are yellowed, even though this is my second piece. It tends to yellow for this robot for no reason. The frustrating about this will be the gun tip of the targetmaster, finding the complete piece is hard and this piece is chipped off as well. For this, Slugslinger is a hard piece to get. No reissues are known for this.

The scenes of Perak trunk roads...

I was off to Pangkor few days ago and as usual during my drive from Bidor to Lumut, Rachel helped me took a few shots of the beautiful scenes of the trunk roads of Perak. The baby palm oil estate. It will boom in a few years time.
Can you see the difference between the baby palm oil and the mature palm oil trees?
The huge Sungai of Perak or the Perak River, we were crossing the Sultan Azlan Shah bridge if I was not mistaken.
Padi fields of Perak state.
More padi fields.
The coconut estate. If you look carefully there are hundreds or even thousands of them.

Driving around the trunk roads of Perak are quite enjoying plus the different plantations along the way. The roads are easy to drive and the road signs are well positioned unlike Kuala Lumpur. Kudos Perak!

Merdeka! Malaysia's 50th Anniversary Independence day! 2007

Forget anything else. Today we celebrate our 50th anniversary of independence day. I'm being proud of being a Malaysian. Yes, a Malaysian. Throughout the years the country has gone thru a lot even though I only manage to go thru 29 years of it. From a British colonial to a multi racial country. No matter how to politicians manipulate the country, this is our country Malaysia. I have no problem living with the rest of people. We have great foods from ethnic Malay to Chinese and Indian, we have also variety of fusion foods as well. Thinking of it, the country changes a lot for this recent decade. We have the twin tower, the F1 circuit and other major structures that highlighted Malaysia. I hope there will be more great years coming to us and MALAYSIA BOLEH!
